CULTURES DIALOGUE FOR DEVELOPMENT
Between Sintra and Bissau promoting bridges for greater harmony

UNICA Mixing Cultures is an NGDO based in Sintra with delegations in Bissau, Belgium, England and S.Tomé and Prince, dedicated to the dialogue between different cultures with the aim of contributing to the Development through actions related to Music, Education, Training and promotion of harmony and equality. The main objective of UNICA is to promote the dialogue of cultures between modern countries and developing countries. A bilateral exchange that stimulates bridges and relations between people or institutions on both sides, allowing cultural enrichment and community sensitivity on the side of developed countries, while simultaneously channeling resources and knowledge to the side of developing countries. At the base of UNICA is the relationship between Portugal and Guinea-Bissau that we use as an example for other projects among other countries, as is already the case of volunteering in Peru.

MISSION BISSAU 2018
MODEL SCHOOL PROJECT: pursuing the will of the President to build a school on behalf of the Sintra City Council, along with the challenge launched by the Guinean Maria Augusta dos Reis Furtado to create a school linked to agriculture and sustainable practices in Guinea-Bissau, UNICA NGDO already has a land provided by Maria Augusta dos Reis Furtado. This is a portion on the farm where the NGDO headquarters in Bissau is located. A privileged space that harmoniously fuses the nature and the proximity to the city. In this sense, Ricardo Assis Rosa, from Sintra, Portugal, professor of architecture at Oxford Brooks University and delegate of the UNICA NGDO in England, integrated the team of 14 volunteers in this mission, with the purpose of researching local building materials, habits and customs, problematic and potentials related to schools. A model school emerges from this research and from the discussion on the subject with school directors and the UNICA team, namely Ana Canelo, representative of the Sintra City Council, Education Division and Tânia Oliveira, elementary school Educator of the European Commission and delegate of UNICA in Belgium. This school has replicable modules to be budgeted: kindergarten module, elementary school module, dry bathrooms, kitchen, applications for outdoor spaces. It will be interesting to continue the project, creating modules suitable for all years of schooling.

VISITING BISSAU SCHOOLS, namely the Centro de Formação Amílcar Cabral, the Pensamento Amílcar Cabral School and the Centro de Animação Infantil, a kindergarten of the NGO Acção para o Desenvolvimento of Guinea-Bissau (adbissau.org). With these three visits, the UNICA NGDO presented to the volunteers three distinct realities lived in the schools of Guinea Bissau.

TRAINING COURSE FOR KINDERGARTENS EDUCATORS – SER ÚNICO (BEING UNIQUE) – Training for kindergartens educators in Bissau counted on a happy increase in registered teachers compared to previous years: we expected about 50 and 127 educators attended. The course was coordinated by Filomena Oliveira and invigorated by Inês Martins – Meditation, Tania de Oliveira and Ana Canelo – Drama, Samuel Matias – Musical Expression, Joana Moita – Plastic Expression and David Martins – First Aid. One could notice the real importance of the contribution that will benefit more than 12 000 children.

PROJECT TWINNED SCHOOLS started with two activities: a song sung by children from Portugal and Guinea-Bissau, music that explains the concept of utopia, nourishing the will to dream, to overcome difficulties, to contribute to a harmonious world. Another activity consisted in delivering to children of schools in Bissau a box with drawings created by Portuguese children and Belgian children. In the same way children from Guinea-Bissau made drawings and collages with cloths, gathered small elements of nature as sticks, leaves, shells and stones to show a little of their world to Portuguese and Belgian children. Finally, an English animal dictionary project with drawings of one animal for each letter made by the children in England was also presented. This project will be developed in the Schools of Guinea-Bissau, creating with the teachers a dictionary of animals in Portuguese and Creole from Guinea-Bissau. These initiatives aim to give a dimension of harmony and healthy interaction between peoples.
